Navajo Country in Utah

WHAT IS THAT?

This is the question I asked my husband as we passed through the heart of Navajo country near Monument Valley, UT. Being the smart person that he is, and the fact that he knows a little bit about everything, he said it was built as a Native American’s house. Well, that didn’t satisfy me, so I asked Google. Get this… It’s called a hogan, and it’s listed on Airbnb for just $179 per night. The hogan is built with mud and juniper trees harvested from local sources. It stays cool in summer and warm in winter.

As I took this picture, my mind began to wonder. You have plenty of time to think when you’re driving through Utah. What would it be like to step back in time where the land was your only resource. Where there was no noise from cars and planes and no mobile devices distracting us. Where the term “working to survive” took on a whole new meaning. Can you picture yourself in that time and place?

We have so much to learn and explore in the world around us.
